'Chris Brown, dance-duo Ayo and Teo, rapper 6ix9ine and the wild cast of Cirque Le Soir all perform on a giant mirrored table seating 180 VIP guests… Welcome to Philipp Plein’s Spring/Summer 2019 extravaganza. It’s going to be a real thriller. 2019 marks the 20th anniversary of the global Philipp Plein brand and to warm up for this incredible milestone, Plein creates a tribute to one of his lifelong heroes: Michael Jackson. On a mirrored runway surrounded by mirrors – tonight everyone is the Man in the Mirror – the iconic symbols of the King of Pop, from his gloves and hats to those Billie Jean socks, are given the full Plein treatment. Cue a military-meets-rock’n’roll collection embellished with paillettes, precious stones, fringing, studs, skulls and crystals in black and white gold. The collection – worn by a supermodel line-up of 30 Smooth Criminals and 30 Dirty Dianas – features favourite Plein fabrics like distressed leather and denim, shiny latex and gold-leafed python. Multi-belts hung around the waist, buckled leather gloves and boots, straps and armbands all inject the serious rebel attitude of Bad. Merging street style with formal looks, the men’s section slides effortlessly from leather quilted tracksuits and sleeveless tour t-shirts to drummer-parade jackets and Dangerous-style monochrome suiting and fedoras. Similarly, the women’s wardrobe mixes skin-tight denim and biker jackets with upscale eveningwear like figure-hugging gowns worn with oversized men’s sparkling jackets and, for the ultimate in show-stopping glamour, bejeweled Janet Jackson bodice dresses. Two decades ago, at the beginning of the brand, the first piece that Philipp Plein made was a hand-customised military parka and, with it, the street couture phenomenon was born. Returning to those roots, this season there are camouflage hooded parkas and field jackets decorated in patches and metallic detailing throughout the collection.'
